a family's journey from debt-ridden to being rid of debt

Hello. My name is Hoover and I’m your host here at Financial Uey.

Wait. Financial WHAT?

“Uey” is slang for u-turn. And a u-turn, according to dictionary.com, is a u-shaped (180°) turn made by a vehicle so as to head in the opposite direction from its original course.

My wife and I have been together for 26 years, apparently oblivious to all things “financial”. And now our little family of 5 is buried under a putrid pile of consumer debt to the tune of almost $84,000 - not counting the home mortgage and car payment.

I’m overwhelmed. Have been for years. In fact, there are times when I literally feel as though I’m drowning.

I wake up in the morning with debt on my mind. I spend most days scheming plans to rob Peter and pay Paul. I go to sleep at night not by counting sheep but by counting bills that we owe.

And I’m so very tired of it all.

So here’s the deal.

This blog is going to be my accountability partner. And I’m willing to be uncomfortably transparent with our finances on this blog in order to change our financial course.

All I ask In return is that you lovingly advise us as we climb out from under the rubble. But tough love is ok. I have pretty thick skin.

Oh, and since I’m being transparent, you need to know that my name isn’t really Hoover. But that’s the name I’ll answer to until my family is debt-free. At which time I’ll reveal my secret identity.

I hope you’re patient.
